On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head from behind by John Wilkes Booth carrying a .44 caliber derringer while the President, his wife and two guests watched "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC. Lincoln was carried across the street to the Petersen house, where he died at about 7:00 am the next morning, April 15, 1865.
