Black History month is about how they overcame slavery, being treated like a second class citizen, not being able to attend school with Anglos, having to sit at the end of the bus, restaurant owners not allowing them to eat at their restaurant.I would have a reason to celebrate if I had been through all that.Wouldn't you?To overcome obstacles and be free is the reason for Black History month.I'm not Black but my grandmother has told me some stories from those times. She's Latina and when she was in her teens she worked at a Hamburger joint, although she could work there she wasn't allowed there on her time off, only Anglos were allowed.I can sympathize with that.

It seems so. If there is to be a "pay back" for all the nasty stuff the other races have felt over the centuries I guess it is fine if there is no "White History Month." But .... if actual equality is the goal then all races should have their month in the sun. That or no one has one.

Black History Month was created to force acceptance that Blacks have contributed to our country in many positive ways. Along with Black beauty contests, Black pride day, etc., it appears Black people want special treatment. However, the predjudice they endured was real, and it continues in less overt ways.
I don't think there should be a White or Black History Month, but as long as some groups denigrate Blacks, I can see the need to educate the public to the contrary.

I've heard this argument before here. Oppression against those who the white race believed were "less than" them is a large part of the legacy of the white race. Were it not for that, none of us would feel the need to identify or strengths within a race - we would just all live in peace.
I always find this argument amusing.

No, and I am white. There are many days that we celebrate a birthday or an occasion that happens to be about a white person. I think that when we dedicated one single month to one race it was to make everyone know apart of history that was kept silenced for too long.

No, there should not be a white history month because there is no white history, there is European history but not white history.and we really do not need a month for that.
There should not be a black history month because majority of the events in world history can be considered black history. Maybe with all the negative stereotyping black people need a month to point out their accomplishments.

there's 11 of 'em already, jeez! no offense but why are you of all people questioning an honor for black people? if anything, there should be just plain history year round integrating all contributions that people are doing and then we wouldn't need to catch up on any individual group.

When Black History month comes around I just ignore it. It is ridiculous to have a month that celebrates the history of one race of people. But then again if you look hard enough, somebody has declared every month "insert my cause here" month. It is ridiculous and the less attention we pay to it, the better off we will be.

i don't think there should be a month for any culture or race. we are all americans and as such we should remember all of the people who have contributed to the betterment of mankind. be it industrial inventions, womens rights, racial equality, or any thing else. i think by having a month set aside to honor any one culture just causes more of a seperation of americans. just my opinion.
okay-now for the thumbs down-
