Success. MP3 Player is a shorthand term used for all portable digital music players (or at least the non-iPod ones, since most people will still call an iPod an iPod) because MP3, as outdated and muddy sounding as it is, is the only universal music file type that can be played on every brand of player out there. iPods are the brand that's made by Apple, which holds 90% of the market share in units with hard-drives and 70% overall. Accordingly, you'll find that the remainder of the industry, particularly in the large-capacity market, tends to emulate them. Not only will many of the competing models be designed to resemble the look of the iPod, but once you hit the 30GB+ range, pretty much every model out there will be priced to match the closest equivalent iPod (MSRP, at least, though individual stores might shave a little off just to help keep their stock moving).

A brand name. As an avid mac fan, I really hate to say it but it is true.
Well, actually I do feel that ipods have a little more useability. That's probably just because windows makes me go crazy.
also I don't think that a lot of mp3 players support mac use besides the ipods.

well, esssentially, an iPod is an MP3 player, but iPod is created by the computer company Apple, is used with iTunes (so you don't have to go searching the net for music, its all right there), and it is charged by being plugged into a computer, unless you buy a charger. I personally prefer iPods, I think they are just better quality and simpler to use!
