Yes, its one for you yanks! Justify the name..... foot ball.... surely it must involve a ball and a foot coming into contact for the majority of the game. Not stopping every 30 seconds to stand in a nice line and pass the ball, with hands, to each other? Football, is the game played by the rest of the world known as soccer in the USA. What were you jealous of the name or something and had to highjack it and add it to a 're-vamped' game of rugby?

You might as well ask why it's called Water Polo - I've never seen aquatic horses!

It's just one of those things.

Hello, I'm a Yank. I can tell you that here in the USA, Soccer is not anywhere near as popular as football, baseball, basketball or hockey. Americans are just not all that into soccer. Soccer here is only popular among young school kids.

Don't know why it is called football. Maybe we did hijack the name from you then we added a lot more strategy, roughness and interest into it.

I just don't like soccer. The players remind me of seals bouncing balls off their heads! I think it's boring compared to American football. Sorry, not a knock on you people or the rest of the world...that's just what I think of soccer, futbol...or whatever it is.

You should also consider the full name of Rugby (Rugby Football League or Rugby Football Union depending on the rules). As with American Football, Canadian Football, Gaelic Football, Aussie Rules Football (I am sure the list is far bigger) I would guess that the names are more a reference to their culture and development rather than their current set of rules.

If we use your logic, football/soccer would be called "flopsy" I enjoy the sport, but it is beyond ridiculous the amount of times these men fall on the ground and roll around like 2 year olds and when the card is given, get up and run as if nothing happened.

The yanks will trade the name football in exchange for the Euros in soccer to act like men, not women.

Yes you might say "American Football" is a hijacked version of Rugby and soccer, with rule changes. American Football is called that beacause we don't call Soccer "football". In earlier games (before Red Grange changed everything with a forward pass) the game consisted of running the ball and kicking it, much like soccer or "football" as the Europeans call it. So it was our version of "football"

How can can anyone actually enjoy soccer? Hardly any action happens. And if someone falls down the ref gives him a card?
Soccer is for 8 year old kids who don't have the mental capacity or attention to follow complex schemes.

The dumbest thing reason that I ever heard about how soccer is better than FOOTBALL is that they love the anticipation of the goal. I relate scoring a goal in soccer vs scoring points in FOOTBALL. Would I want to have great sex once a year, or mediocre sex twice a week.

I love your question. I don't understand how someone like moonfroggyfrogsfroggy can be such a victorian - era traditionalist.
Writing down the whole history of a game of such dullness.

By the way, the southerners came up with the game, not the yanks.

Sigh. English imperialism rears its ugly head once again. You think you own the world and get to criticize everyone else's culture. Does it irk you that so many "darker" nations play cricket better than you do now? Talk about a sport that stops and starts. There's even a "tea interval". Jolly, what?

Football, I guess the kick off.............. I don't really think it matters, it's all about fun, unless you are a player then it's money.....The streets are empty, very few leave their homes, no politics are involved. Cowboy fan but pulling for the Bears.......Love the commercials.

footballs history goes back to 10 centry BD when greeks played the game with hand. but as the ball was too hard to hit with hand their hands would swell so they started kicking the ball....as it is known that in greek foutous means foot..thus kicking a ball..it (ball) was known as poumplus...was known to foor ball...thus the name continues...hope this will solve your question...
