Wow! There are a lot of great ideas here!
I have a "things-to-do" list, with all the items I ever need, and stars and dates by the very few that are actually due by a deadline. For each room, I have an item like
"13. Clean livingroom",
etc. Then, I discipline myself to do any
10 things from the list each day, and I count them off as they get done. That way, I am really motivated to clean a particular room.
If a room is just too disordered, sometimes it gets listed as two "things", like-
23. Put away groceries and re-organize fridge
24. Clean kitchen.
Be creative with this!

Hire a Maid ..lol just kidding.
A good rule of thumb never leave a room without taking something with you to put away.
focus on one area at a time work from top to bottom and go in a circle.
I also carry a laundry basket around when I am trying to do a quick "sweep" through...I throw everything in that basket and then put it away after I have vaccumed.
I set aside weeklys /monthlys too...like the fridge for example is a weekly clean windows a monthly.....
Get the family involved in helping out too...kids can start at a young age putting things away when they are done with it.
Hope some of this is helpful to you.

If you want to clean the entire house, set your timer for 3 hours, have cleaning supplys in a bucket, ppr towels, etc. start at one end of the house and dont stop till you get to the other end. After your initial clean you can cut your time in half if you continue this on a weekly routine. Never go to bed with dirty dishes in sink, it only takes a few minutes and you can't go to bed until dishes are done & teeth are brushed, you'll feel so good when you get up and have a clean environment to start your day. Do your sheets on Sat. or Sun. and make up your mind thats how it's gona be. Your the boss of your life, make yourself happy, ... Or hire a maid.

I start at one end of my house and work my way to the other end.By this time, it time to start all over again. So my husband sugested that we have a maid come in once a week. She only works for 4 hours. I just write down a list of things that I couldn't get to. She does only these things. It really helps me out a lot as I work 10 hour days 6 days a week, my husband does absolutly nothing, I have two cats, And I live in Arizona where you could dust furniture on a daily basis. The cost for a maid to come in for 4 hours is reallly not that much.. Check it out.

It's much easier if you do little bits every day. I try to do one room every day (I have a small house). The one room I NEVER let get away from me is the bathroom. I always keep the sink/toilet/bathtub clean. Always. The floor gets mopped once a week.
Setting the timer is a "game" I play. I set it for 10 minutes and see how much cleaning I can get done. OR I'll pretend that someone just pulled into the driveway, and if I'd be embarassed to have them come in, I know that my house is too messy.

The way I do it so that I am able to clean my entire home weekly despite my busy schedule is this. I delegate different rooms in the house each night. FOr example Tuesday night is my bathroom night. I am able to totally clean my bathroom every Tuesday night. I wash all dishes after dinner but on Thursday night I give the kitchen a total cleaning. On Sunday mornings I strip all beds and wash and dry sheets. Vacuuming the floors then remake all beds. THe dusting can be done over one or two nights. If you have children you can delegate some tasks for them to help.

A good way is to have a schedule and not to do too much at one time. For example, you do your regular daily things for no more than 15 minutes each but focus on getting the living room clean and no other room, then the next week you focus on another room.
This comes from a website called fly lady. I'm a huge fan of hers. For more tips and advise you should visit her site at the link below.
I know exactly how you feel. I hope this helps.

When you're done using something, put it away... I know it sounds ridiculously easy, but it's the problem I have... I like to eat on the couch, so I just set my dishes on the table next to me, and they pile up there. In the bathroom, I leave my contact solution and my brush out, and that slowly gets dirty... Then I see the little messes and I think "who cares, I'll fix it when I get a chance," and just keep piling things up until I take a day to clean the whole thing. But if I just put things away when I finished with them, my house would be clean all the time.

I clean on Saturday mornings every room. It is a cleaning day, I try to get everything down from when I get up till about 3:00. I make it a goal to have everything down except for the laundry which can take longer. I only have the radio on, and I shut off everything else like the tv's and computers, that way I am not distracted.
I grew up with my mom and grandma doing this and it has worked for them and so far for me.
