It's religious fundamentalism and a culture of hate and violence. Death and murder is glorified as a holy act.

Ooooh. Good question!
It can't be boiled down to one simple answer. When people live in poverty, or feel powerless in some other fashion, they often gravitate towards certain ideologies, some of which are attached to fundamentalist faiths. (Contrast the Saudi royal palaces with the hovels of the common people). Feeling powerless and alone causes a person to want to place blame on someone, so the ideologue leaders usually find a convenient target to hate: Israel, the United States, people of another religion, people of another race, etc.
This creates destablization in a region where there is absolutely NO interest for the Western governments....save one. Oil. George Bush was correct when he said that we are addicted to Oil. And Oil is the one reason why the government heads and royal families over there are rich while the common person is eating dirt. And without the oil, most of us probably wouldn't give a rat's behind about what's going on over there. So, its a self-sustaining loop of greed, need, and angst that would probably only collapse should the Western countries become energy independent. Then the only ones left to rattle their swords over what is going on over there would be those domestic persons who feel as powerless as those who become jihadists.

It is a warring religion and a society that has created people who have no respect for human life.
Ultimately though, since everyone is born with free will, each murdering individual is responsible for the chaos. The Middle East is a breeding ground for savages.
We really can't blame oil at all, long before we had an oil powered anything those people were killing each other.

Ideology of Fascism and the New World Order.
The Mulsims have the gold(oil) and the NWO wants it. The fact that the Muslims are Radical in that area of the world fits into the fear against them that the administration feeds on to frighten the American people!
If we just stayed out of their business we wouldn't have to worry about them fighting back!
I agree that the way they run their religion and the human atrocity that occurs in the name of that religion is terrible, but let's not confuse the fact that our government and others in the world are not fighting human atrocity they are fighting for control of the Middle East in the future.
If it were about human rights we would be fighting in EVERY country that imposes a iron fist over human rights like China.

All of the above....
Its culture, clashes, hatred, etc. that has been around for 1000's of years. Fundamental ideology on many fronts (muslim, jew, christian). Money-- oil, resources, etc. Religious extremism.
You know, if these religious people actually abided by the major tenets of their religion, they'd probably be ok. All of the major religions in that area have concepts of charity, peace, tolerance. Problem is, the troublemakers harp on the dark sides of the backgrounds.

sand+heat+no fun= too many pissed off people per capita
ideology combined with basic human nature. too many people bred from ignorance letting the slightest in differences between individuals keep them up at night.
economic rule of oil is always a bad distraction, but most of the countries that have territorial control over the prehistoric cash crop can't be trusted to use the financial benefits in a positive way because of their ideologies.
countries that are ruled by religion, like islamic regimes, have extensive clan ties that put way too much emphasis over the importance of ethnic pride. one disruption in the clan network, sh*t trickles downhill, everyone is claiming jihad on someone.

The fundamental issue is one religion that teaches that it is its followers' religious duty to kill everyone who doesn't believe in that religion.

It is the struggle of the jihadi and fundamentalist muslims to re-establish the Caliphate and place all mankind under their domination. Their stated and unashamed goal is to conquer all mankind in the name of Allah. If they get nukes, Heaven help us all!
