PSP is bricked when its system memory is corrupted or erased. That's why your PSP cannot start up.

Virus can brick your PSP. But the most common way to brick your PSP is when you try to enable your PSP to run homebrew programs. In order to make your PSP run homebrews, you need to update your PSP system memory with a customized system program. The process of doing that is very risky and if you do not know what you are doing, you will brick your PSP.

So, to avoid that, don't try to enable your PSP to run homebrews.

But the temptation is there. Imagine you can play Final Fantasy 7 and Pokemon Ruby on your PSP. Wouldn't you want to do that :).

Bricking your PSP is not a virus it is a corruption in the bios files which make it unable to load
do not remove the battery while updating do not turn it off while updating do not use a downgrader for a version other than what you have
do not remove the memory stick while updating
all could well will lead to a brick the term brick is for the fact that if you do it your psp will be as usefull as a brick
