Leonard Maltin in my opinion but some would argue Robert Ebert.

I would deffinetly say Roger Ebert. He has made himself into a household name, not only writing critiques for the Chicago Sun Times, but hosting a TV show and syndicated movie reviews appear in over 200 newspapers around the country. He is a Pulitzer Prize winning critic and has published 15 books. Yearly he publishes a movie year book. I deffinetly think he is the most famous American film critic- love him or hate him he is still around and very much respected.

I think Siskel and Ebert were the most famous in my day.
(Ebert is still alive).
Their names were inseparable until Siskel died and Ebert grouped up with others.

Probably Roger Ebert of Siskel and Ebert fame. Siskel's dead, and his new partner, Roeper, is not as well known.
