Agree with "Arup" above...
**Short sight = Myopia (correct with concave lense). These patients are able to see near object fine but, have difficulty with distant vision.
**Far sight = Hypermetropia (correct with convex lese). These patients are unable to see near objects.

Your colleague is wrong. You are short sighted though it depends on your prescription as to how well you see her features. (I'm a short sighted -10 and can barely see my my hand 6 inches from the end of my nose!) Long Sighted is where you can see things in the distance but require lenses to see up close (Reading Glasses. You need normally only wear these on occasions) The true definition of Short Sighted is you cannot see anything further than a certain distance from your eyes. Near sighted is the American term for short sighted.

Myopia (short sight), where the cornea is curved too much, or the lens is too powerful. The power of the eye is too great and the image of far objects is formed in front of the retina. Far objects appear blurred.
Hypermetropia (long sight) is where the eye is not powerful enough, leading to the image of near objects is behind the retina. Near objects appear blurred.
If the short-sighted person wears spectacles with a concave or diverging lens the light rays spread or diverge just before they reach the eye, and then are focused exactly on the retina.
A long-sighted person must wear spectacles which have a convex lens. This brings in, or converges, the rays before they reach the eye so that they focus exactly on the retina.

Hi
Short sight means a person who can see the objects far from him but not the objects near to him. It happens generaly at the age of 40 or approaching to 40. You must have seen those peoples reading news paper or magazine by making the news paper some away from their eyes, while in case of having long sight, he can see the objects near to him but not the far objects.
For those having a short sight, they should take much green foods everyday, but before noon.
In some books i've also seen that after taking a mouth full of water, throwing water to the open eyes (ten times to each eyes) makes a very good result for rectification of the sight problem.
Please mail me to know more about this. bye

I have never heard of 'short sight' or 'long sight' ... the terms eye doctors use here are 'near sighted' and 'far sighted' ... which tells you whether you can see things 'near' better or 'far' better. As to 'what type of lens' is used to rectify it, I think you're asking is it a 'convex' or 'concave' lens ... but because the lenses are 'ground' differently for each patient, but you should be able to find out what 'kind' they are by doing a search for 'eyeglass lenses' and possibly 'convex' and 'concave' ...

i don't know about the lens because i am not a doctor but since you have asked about short sight it means that you are not able to look far and long sight means that you are not able to look near.
