Hi,

In the US employers actually can have an appearance policy and need you to dress an appropriate way or cut your hair. If you deal with the public, this is particularly common. So the answer is yes. You will have to decide if you want your job or your hair. You could find another job that will accept your hair, but remember if you work in an office, it might be tough. while everyone would back freedom of expression, when the bottom line is at stake, they want you to look a way that makes everyone comfortable. Many people also associate dreads with not washing, of course the not washing your hair part is true, and so they can have a case there too.

Also, you can't really lie and say it's for religious reasons if it's not true. You might have to provide evidence of that which you won't have. Also an appearance rule does not legally have to bend for religious reasons, as I said employers have a protected right here to choose dress codes, so you might still be legally asked to find another job, even if it were really religious.

It is probably in the best intrest of that company to keep all employes neat and clean. If there is a policy about length of hair, then you need to cut it. It also depends what proffession you are in. If you are in food service, most people do not want to see dreads flying around thier food, if you understand what I mean. No insult intended, but that is just a professional response, also comming from a consumer perspective. Good Luck!!!

First, I would ask you what line of work are you in? If you are considered a "white-collar" employee and you do not cut your dreads you are paving the way for your followers. Others will look up to you for your perseverance and determination. However, you may risk being treated unfairly by your boss and/or co-workers. If you decide to cut them...they won. If I was you, I would not cut my dreads. Stand your ground. If they fire you over it, appeal it. That is not a good enough reason to fire someone. However, your boss may find other things that gives him the right to get rid of you. Be on your toes at all times...and always do the right thing.

Realize that any request of this nature is designed to improve the business. If you are working for salary and care nothing for whether or not the business is a success, quit, and do everyone a favor. When you care more about your businesses success and being part of a smooth working team than you do about something as insignificant as a little hair, you will have indeed matured into a thinking adult.

Depends what line of work you are in. He has the right to do so if you are in the service industry. Perhaps you should seek work were you are not in contact with the public.

Get a haircut, and get a real job!!!!!!

Seriously, no REAL JOB is going to allow you to have dreadlocks.

And no man would want them anyway.
