would the bad gas have ruined the catalytic converter as well?

sulfur doesnt ruin a cat convetrer.....it ruins the silver contacts on the fuel gauge sending unit....giving you a wrong gas gauge reading

Likely it wasn't sulfur in the fuel that ruined your gas tank. It was most probably damaged by running your tank low on fuel allowing condensation to build up creating corrosion and other water/ petroleum mix maladies. An ill-tempered motor brought on by trying to suck crap through the fuel system can, over time create exhaust irregularities enough to prematurely damage the cat converter. A pint of commercial fuel system dryer should be put in on some kind of a regular basis or just share a bottle of cheap vodka with your auto once in awhile. hic...some for you, some for me, some for you....

If it ruined the catalytic converter I think the downstream O2 sensor would pick that up and set a code.
