I have seen similar disproportionate reactions to "suspicious" items long before 9/11. I'm not sure there is any way to completely eliminate them. There is an element of human judgment involved, and everybody can make mistakes.
About 12 years ago, I watched this drama. A briefcase was found unattended on top of a mailbox next to a bus stop. The street was barricaded, buses and traffic were rerouted, two helicopters circled overhead, a large truckload of gravel was brought in, and the briefcase was blown up. It didn't contain a bomb, so an hour or two later things were back to normal.
If I had found that briefcase, I would have opened it to look for the owner's contact information, to return it. I would still do that. Am I wrong? If I guess wrong, the result will not be good.

The Boston Fuzz have simply gone mental. I saw brief coverage of this story on BBC 24 News. The so-called bombs are just cartoon characters and look exactly like that. It's a generation thing. If you are young, you watch the Cartoon Channel in the States and recognise these 'cartoons'. If you're old like me and live in England and never ever watch childish cartoons, then you will have a biased oppinion. Down with cartoons, they're dangerous, right!! Arrest everyone, including the paper delivery boy. Yeah and no laughing in the street.

I would rather have the police over react then not react at all. What if there was a real bomb, I would of been angry if the police did noting and people got hurt. The Boston people just want to protet themself from and threats. You can't blame them, We all saw what happen on 9/11 and it is in our best interest to keep everyone safe.

Possibly up to half the population of Boston contributed to the Provisional IRA's fund raising efforts in the 1970's, 80's & 90's. Perhaps their paranoid about chickens coming home to roost.

The thing is Boston was the only major city that went bezerko. They planted all those ads in seven major cities and nobody else went nut, not even in redneck Austin Texas. It sez alot about Boston and their beans.

Boston's authorities need to get a grip! Those cute little devices were placed in several cities around the country and nobody else went off the deep end. Several chiefs of police said it was glaringly obvious the items were not dangerous. I dunno 'bout them sox, either ;o)
