We all remember when we were 12 (give or take) and we couldn't wait for that wonderful day when we saw that first sign that we were now a woman. Oh, how soon that exhuberance died when reality set in.
Did you celebrate your first one with a special treat? I got my ears pierced and did the same for my daughter. How did you celebrate? Girls day out at the spa? New clothes?
Moms with daughters - how did/will you celebrate with your daughter?

Jillian H - I had to laugh when I read yours. I remember when my sister started hers - I was 15 and she was 12 and we were home alone together and had been arguing that day. She called me from the bathroom horrified asking me what it was (we had been educated but that first time can still be a shocker). I was still mad at her from the argument so without a word I just picked up a pad, threw it at her and shut the door. I feel so bad for her when I think about it now.

I'm surprised how many people were upset about the first one. I know for me it was the only one I was excited about. I think that is why so many people help their daughters and friends celebrate it. After that first time, it's a major burden.

I didn't celebrate at all, I was so confused & upset. I do remember it was teh night of the Oscars (a few years ago) & as soon as it was over I had to go to the bathroom ( or so I thought)m but suprise it was blood!! At first I was in complete shock & then it sunk in I started screaming my head off & crying. It was a few months after my parents had split & I lived with my dad so I ran into his room & woke him up, lol, he didn't really know what to say or do, he asked me if I knew & I was hysterical & was like I don't know, so he called my aynt & she helped me. I eventually calmed down, but it would of been much easier if my mother would of explained the "birds & bees " talk alittle more clearly. I knew where babies came from & that a woman had a period I guess I just didn't understand the whole concept of it all. I had just heard bits & pieces from my friends about " the change" so I looked at it as a negative thing, not a natural thing. So on my first period I was freaked out that if a guy got too close I'd get pregnant, my then my aunt explained to me even more throughly which put me at ease. Afterwards I felt so dumb!! I guess it was just the shock of something new, recovering from my parents divorce, lack of knowledge, & hormones. lol I look back on it now & can laugh which is a good thing. So when I have kids I'll be sure to explain the birds & bees talk & not leave out such imperative parts & I'll be sure that they wont think of it as a negative thing & they can learn from my mistakes or lack of knowledge. oh, gosh lol, I was a total mess on my first period!! Well live & learn, but there was no celebration lol just a few panic attacks. lol Good Luck!! & its sweet that you & your daughter celebrate!!

I did not celebrate mine. I knew what it was when it came, but I had also had a case of strep throat the first time. I was very ill and really didn't give a flip. I was one of the first to get mine, and my best friend was jealous, so I did not talk about it much. Then when she got hers she could not stop talking and I got to where I would just role my eyes. lol. I don't have a daughter, but if I did, I think I would make it a special day because you do have lots of hormones raging, and they could use the extra help. Most girls crave chocalate so I think I might would take her to get her ears peirced and then go for some kind of chocalate treat.

In my days no one talked about it, it was like taboo, But, me and my friends read a book and found out about it. When I got mine at 13. my aunt had a cake for me, I could have died, because my two cousins (boys) were at the so called party. Then the best was, They gave me money to buy Modest at the drug store, So now I'm walking down the street, Criss Crossing my legs because I was afraid I would bleed all over. And then they gave me this belt and told me to put it on. 1/2 hour later, I figured it out. That was in 1954( We've come a long way since then)

Well I pass out of the sight of blood and I'm a dancer so I made the decision earlier that I would just start off with tampons. So I woke up on a Summer Saturday morning and had it and i was suppose to go to the local amusement park with my best friend so after spending a hour of lieing on the shower floor so i didnt pass out i went downstairs and my mom asked me why I wasn;t ready. I was just like Im not gonna go and then she was like why? I just said I got my period this morning and then I just layed on the kitchen floor for a couple hours and then watched tv. Funn//lol♥Caitlyn

I wasn't waiting for mine that was for sure!! I got mine at 13 (wish I got it at 16 instead lol)
I hated it, and what's to celebrate? Cramps? Stains in my BRAND new underwear?
I still dread my once a month surprise, it's nothing but a nuisance to me, it gets in the way of my activities, and other fun things I do.
I didn't scream though, because I thought I knew what is was, but I wasn't 100% sure, so I asked my Mom lol and she said "Yup, that's your period" and hugged me lol And as my Mom and I were talking about it my older brother was out side the door listening!!!! I didn't want my Mom to tell anyone at all, now my lil Sis and Bro, and older Bro know about it -.- Although my Grandma, Grandpa, Dad etc do not lol
I never celebrated, I only cried, out of sadness, not happiness lol
Good question, it's kind of neat reading about other girls stories about their first time getting it lol

I didn't get anything. But my story is funny.........
I was playing outside with my brothers (April fools day, What a WONDERFUL prank) and I was like it feels weird down there. So I went to the bathroom and grab ed some panty-liners (Thought pantyliners were pads, I had no clue about anything) I didn't tell my Mom because she was already angry at me. (So I keep using panty liners thinking they are pads.) I cried a lot that night I also read my Judy Blume "are you there God, it's me Margaret
6 months goes by and I don't have anything (Except my Moms super tampons) Then she buys pads and I used those for two months. (I now thank god I had a light flow, since I was using Panty liners)
Are you ready for the funny part?
So December rolls around and my Mom was screaming one morning "WHERE ARE MY PADS? DID YOU USE THEM, I CAN'T FIND THEM ANYWHERE! DID YOU THROW THEM AWAY? DID THE BOYS USE THEM FOR SOMETHING? I CAN'T FIND THEM! (My name) DID YOU START YOUR PERIOD? OH MY GOD! YOU STARTED YOUR PERIOD AND YOU DIDN'T TELL ME! I AM YOUR MOTHER AND YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHEN YOU STARTED! I AM GOING CRAZY AND YOU ARE SITTING HERE WITH THIS SECERT?
That was what I can remember of my Mom's rant. So then a week later (A few days before Christmas) We have to go to a Holiday party and I sat in bed all morning because I needed stuff. So I just waited til she came in my room telling me to get dressed, and I told her to go get stuff. I need her to get stuff with me soon (Like in a few days) anyway so maybe I will get something.
My Dad knew I had it before my Mom did. I thought that was funny. So now she tells everybody the story because she thinks it is as interesting has me.

I still remember, I was 15, and walking down to our chickens to collect the eggs and I thought I had wet my pants. I went back up to the house to the toliet only to find that it was my period. I was upset because I was wearing a favourite pair of undies (his pants for her). I yelled out to my sister (mum was at work) and she stuck her head out of her bedroom door asking if I wanted a pad or tampon. I was horrified she was asking me that question. "a pad of course" I replied! I thought you would lose your virginity if you used a tampon! (lol) I couldn't wait to tell mum. When she came home, I had to wait because she had a friend over! But when I did tell her she said she knew already! My sister had yelled out her bedroom window to mum "she's becoming a woman". Cow....she spoilt my surprise! lol..there was no celebration....

I was 11 and i had no idea what the hec k was going on with me i thought i was dying! my mom never told me, i guess she thought already new. I had to tell my dad because my mom was out of town at work...he tried to explain the best he could and took me to the store and helped me buy pads and he told me to fill the cart with chocolate...he said thats what my mom always did. The funny part is, is that every month i go to the store and get loaded up on my chocolate.

I didn't celebrate- I was mortified. I came from a family that was real hush-hush about intimate details of that kind. So it was never a celebrated thing. I do remember, however, that I was grounded from the T.V. (I was about 10 years old) and when I started that day, I was so afraid to tell my mom. I walked into her bedroom and told her and I guess she felt sorry for me and let me lay on her bed with her and we watched T.V. for the rest of the evening. Kinda cool.
