I think the Romans introduced woad as it was not a native plant. So it might be a myth. Or they used a different dye.

Maybe from the dogwhelk, Nucella? (My idea)

It is still cultivated on a small scale in Lincolnshire. Brew an infusion and get out your paintbrush and that should do the trick!
