A patriot is proud of his country.
A nationalist thinks that his country is superior to all other countries, that his country's needs take precedence, that all other countries should serve his.
The line between the two is dangerously easy to cross.

Patriotism is different from nationalism because country and nationality are not always the same thing. If the people of Yugoslavia had been patriots instead of nationalists, the fall of communism in that country would not have led to so much ethnic (nationalist) violence. In the USA we would have the same problem if the KKK, Nation of Islam and other racial extremist had more support.. Fortunately most people here do not listen to these extremists.
Most nationalists would consider themselves patriotic because they believe strongly in a particular country. Sometimes the country they believe in something that they want to create out of an older country. Sometimes they want to create it by separating from a larger country. Sometimes they want to create empires by conquering other nations.
Nationalists are not always bad. Some nationalists want to free a conquered nation from a foreign ruler. In that case i would consider a nationalist a patriot the same thing.

Patriotism is simply a love of/devotion to one's country.
Nationalism is baically a philosophy/policy of placing the interests of one's own nation separate from the interests of other nations and the common interests of all nations.
