Yes, I do it on a regular basis. First put a filter in the coffeemaker basket. Use distilled white vinegar and pour it in the coffeemaker until it is about half full. Then let it set about 30 minutes so all the hard water deposits and gunk are loosened. Next turn the coffeemaker on and let the vinegar run through. The filter will catch all the junk so I sometimes run the vinegar through a second time. However, you can just go to the rinse now.Use plain water for a rinse to get out all the vinegar.
Next time you make coffee you will see the difference in how fast your coffee brews.

If you are cleaning the maker it's self then yes mixed with water run thru 2-3 times, but if your cleaning the pot then use ice cubes and salt and swish it around until all of the stains come off then rinse,

I use an old fashioned pot on the stove.
You can use other household items besides vinegar.
Baking soda, used on an old toothbrush, to scrub the "guts", works wonderfully. Or on the basket of a coffee maker.
For a coffee maker, vinegar works.
