Is it the best idea? Why or why not? This is a question for my 10 year old's Social Studies project, just intended to get a sample of people's opinions. If it helps any, his project is about the use of walls throughout history and how they compare with this proposed fence. Thanks in advance!

This won't be much help for your son, but in my opinion walls never stopped any migration. Not too sharp on my history, but maybe the Great Wall of China did back in those days. The Soviets Berlin wall didn't keep desperate people from searching freedom. If we built a wall, we'd have to have an ARMY just to police it--CONSTANTLY! AND our coasts! Hungry people from South AND Central American, let alone Mexico, and the rest of the world, are desperate to find employment and a "the land of opportunity".

I do believe that in any case, we DO have to have more strict inspection of people entering the country! The recent change requiring a passport from everyone entering our borders is good.

I have NO IDEA what the "answer" is!! PROBABLY a national ID card, but that flys in the face of "freedom" and just invites more government controls. My best guess is that we'll just have to go on absorbing the migrants, adjust, pay more taxes to insure the education and health of all our residents. AND a gradual change in the demographics of the country. I would definitely prefer that to more of a police state.

If I had to compare the Border Fence to any walls in history, I'd compare it to the two most famous, Berlin Wall and Great Wall of China. As for how it compares to the Berlin Wall, both walls will be used for the purposes of keeping people INSIDE of a certain area so that they can better be controlled. The Border Fence is also a lot like the wall in China because that wall was built to keep invaders out of the country, just as this fence would (supposedly) be used to keep illegal immigrants out.

The Border Fence would not work for a few reasons. Mainly because of costs, resistance, and the simple fact of who is going to build it? If we built this fence, it would end up like the Berlin Wall did.

Hope I was helpful.

Not a good idea. But I know that the ladder companies on the Mexican side will do a booming business. The will cross where the wall does not exist. Like locking the front door but leaving the back door open.

All the US did was put a bandage on the problem. The problem is the Mexican culture of the rich running the economy and keeping the poor as they are. When was the last time you heard of Americans trying to cross the border en masse.

Most walls in history were either used for defense reasons or for farming reasons. This fence between Mexico and the U.S. have many implications, but the obvious function is to provide an illegal immigrant detterent. Personally, I feel that this country positively gains from this outpouring of immigrants who work hard AND pay taxes without the benefit of being citizens. The people that come here from other countries are USUALLY hard working people who are here to only add to the economy here in the United States. I feel that if people are so worried about job loss in the U.S. they should be wary of the continued overseas markets and outsources of our industry to other countries. This is a situation that the Bush administration is in support of. Not two or three days ago Bush stated in an address to Peoria that the U.S. is only 5% of all the available markets and that we (the U.S.) should take advantage of the other 95%. Because of this global market, the U.S. has lost many manufacturing jobs and many families have lost a way of income, not to mention the many violations of worker exploitation that is being produced from these underpaid, over worked foriegn factories.
This topic is interesting because both Democrats and Repbublican camps have opposers and supporters of the fence and of illegal immigrants. I'm looking forward to other people's responses to this question. Good Luck!

No, simply because the government will not fund any bill they have passed. It's sad to watch the illegals pass through without anyone stopping them except the people who stand up. China's great wall , like some of the other answers, caused millions of peasant farmers to die, however, it protected the cities and rich nobles from mongolian huns. They were forced to, they had no choice. Maybe that's what we should do, since nothing else is working.

The wall will work but only so long as they are able to keep in in place. However, once the wall is up, the illegals will find other ways of getting across the border.

I think that if we put up a solid fence, that it may help. The difference between our fence, and some others is that we are attempting to protect our country from illegals, not actuall citizens that we simply don't like.

I do think that we also need to increase border patrols, and have tighter security all around...

I have a better idea!
Why don't we just take over Mexico's political party and call Mexico...Lower America. Next we can go after Canada! Upper America! So then we would all be Upper/Middle/Lower America!
YEAH! Then nobody would have to sneak in.

No. We need a wall similar to China's 'great wall'. Have mexicans build it, standing on the south side. Mine the north side.

Well, the current security isn't working, so it would be an improvement. But in order to have true security, we need to quit convicting border patrol agents for shooting armed drug dealers...
