It's serious, but not as serious as people make it out to be. The oceans are not going to rise by twenty feet tomorrow, or even next week. Melting killer glaciers are not going to flood us out of our homes while we sleep.
Does this mean that we can treat the earth with disrespect? Of course not. As a Christian, I believe that the earth is sacred because God created it, so we should take care of it.
So while global warming is a threat, it's not as much of a threat as some people make it out to be. Whatever will be, will be. If the end of the world is inevitable, there is NOTHING we can do to stop it, though we might be fortunate enough to put it off for awhile.
Sorry for making my answer all religious, but the state of the world is something that I tie into my faith, more than my political persuasion.
The earth has gone through heating and cooling stages for as long as there's been life on it. I don't think that this global warming is completely man-made. But we should still take care of the earth, and do everything we can to make sure it's still here for our descendants.

The earth has experienced warming and cooling periods throughout it's history. These periods have not always been detrimental and in fact the last warming period occurred in Medieval Times and was quite beneficial to European agriculture. Global Warming may be occurring, but there is no concrete evidence to support that it is man made. If it is natural which is indeed possible, no amount of human intervention is going to change it. We should be concerned about pollution on this planet. We should recycle, reduce energy dependence and generally do everything possible to make this planet beautiful and habitable. What we should not do is buy into the political hysterics being fostered upon us which are based solely the desire for additional government funding and overall agenda based control of our lives. Each person must make their own choice regarding what to believe, but I am always suspicious when scientists start talking about consensus. Science is about verifiable provable facts, not consensus. Postulations too often have to be amended because they are proved wrong. Global Warming is a great example of this considering it started out a little over 30 years ago as Global Cooling.

I will also answer this question but I have no chance of getting best answer as there are already some excellent answers given.

It may be a serious issue but it has nothing to do with mankind. We are not making any significant difference either way.

What no one has hit on yet is the fact that this global warming hype is an excellent way of taxing more things to make more revenue while convincing easily lead people into thinking it's all to do with saving the planet. Cobblers, as people have already said, it's a naturally occuring cycle and we have no real control over it.

Secondly, who are these morons who know nothing about ice and glaciers melting. With icebergs and glaciers that are in the sea only one third of them are above the water line. As we all know water expands its volume when it is frozen. If the glaciers/icebergs all melt the gap left by the ice thawing will be plenty to take whatever is above the water line so it's debatable if all the ice melts if any flooding will occur at all. In fact it might even go the other way... think about it...

I personally think it is a good idea to recycle but hate to be lied and threatened into doing it by people who continually harp on about global warming.

The weather men have great difficulty predicting the weather a week ahead so what chance have they got predicting stuff tens of years into the future. The 'experts' warned us we were due the worst winter in decades this year, and it came and went and it was, in fact, one of the best winters we have had that I recall.

One woman answered a post of mine last week convinced that within 10 years the planet will change dramatically and all the seaward areas will be under water... she had seen maps and everything which convinced her it was going to happen. It reminds me of the 50's and 60's when Jehovahs whitnesses used to walk about with placards declaring "the end of the world was nigh"... they were convinced and there was solid proof fed to them which turned out to be utter garbage.

Easily led people will be terrified about these global warming scares so governments should come clean and tell it how it really is, not beat us with a 'big fear stick'

The difference many people DON'T get about people who challenge much of the global warning rhetoric is that many of us do recognize that global warming exists, we just question (1) just how serious it really is, (2) to what extent Man has anything to do with it, and (3) what if anything can be done about it that does not go beyond deconstructing Western societies.

The problem we have with those who swallow the global warming hysteria COMPLETELY is that those people totally shut down dialogue. What ever happened to scientific discussion? You never hear it on this topic. In fact, questioners in the scientific community are ostracized. It's simply "Believe what we say and shut-up."

Simple -- For starters, there is a huge body of scientific evidence that indicates global warming is not happening. Secondly, the evidence put forth by those who say global warming IS happening is fundamentally flawed. Finally, even if it is happening there's no way to know whether we can do anything about it. The media spin on this issue is so jaded it borders on criminal negligence. Any time someone criticizes the opinion of a scientist who says global warming is happening or questions the veracity of the data or the means by which he/she gathered that data, the response is "Anyone with half a brain can see that global warming is happening." OK, so now because you pulled out the old childish "Liar, liar, pants on fire" litany we're supposed to believe you? It would be one thing if all the scientists who are studying this possibility were using proven scientific methods and weren't under the influence of pro-environmental factions. That's not the case here. Until this problem is looked at by objective scientific minds who aren't influenced by money, fame, or political pressure, we'll never know if it's really happening.

The earth has always gone through times of warming and times of cooling. It just seems that a lot of people are thinking that this cycle will be different. In about 10 years everyone will be talking about global cooling!

i think its a facade to better the environment. a scare tactic because no one responded to the true issue that were gonna be living in a craphole if we don't take care of our environment. the hole in the ozone layer fluctuates and it always has. our world has endured climate shifts before, and it wasn't due to pollution, because at the time there was none. until we have actual substantial evidence, rather than the faulty systems we are basing our information off of 100 years ago, i don't believe its happenning. it seems like the liberals are using global warming as a means to justify the outcome of the agenda.

Two main reasons. First, it's happened lots of times before, and second, there's really nothing we can do about it anyway. It's a NATURAL process, mostly caused by solar weather, and the small 3% that mankind is responsible for isn't enough to make any real difference. It's just scare tactics by Liberals looking to gain even more power over the People.

It is not that big of a deal. Science has proved that it is a naturally occurring cycle and while man may have some impact we are not the primary cause. The politicians are, as always being alarmist to polarize the voters. We should clean up pollution as much as possible just because it is the right thing to do.

Global warming, for whatever reason it exists is totally out of human control, but there are those special interest groups (liberal control freaks) that want to "guide" us in their political direction using fear and misinformation. The “Staggering” levels WE produce are a total fiction, when compared to the natural cyclic production of atmospheric Co2 and Methane. Some of the methods our government granted students are using to create their daily “staggering” levels, are very carefully collected near freshly fertilized crops, active volcano’s and rain forests (surprise?). Global warming IS happening, a given, but not for the reasons our leftist liberal science sources, politicians and press are reporting. Only about 8 percent of the "new" Co2 in the atmosphere is contributed by all man made sources including the overall world consumption of fossil fuel, livestock (and human) fluctuation and crop fertilization. The majority of scientific studies are now discounting Carbon Dioxide emitted by motor vehicles (burning of fossil fuels) as any MAJOR cause. Geological history (through ice core samples) indicates natural solar cycles are the culprit, something politicians have no power over so they ignore. The real short-term danger is in fact a buildup of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, but not Co2. The real culprit is Methane, a far more potent greenhouse gas, being released into the atmosphere by the decay of Methane Hydrate occurring naturally frozen on the ocean floors, due to the gradual (natural) warming of ocean water by the (natural) solar cycle. Another item our politicians have no control over and the liberal media will never mention. Follow the money trail... They promote revenue and power by promoting fear. "We just have to do SOMETHING...You know"? So they continue to promote cars as the culprit. If we reduce world fossil fuel consumption by 10% it would have absolutely no effect on natural climate change, and the world would be plunged into economic chaos.
