You Need to Learn on An Acoustic Guitar, You should be able to find a Good decent one for for about $100. Try the Pawn Shops or the The Used Instrument stores in your Area.
But When you learn on an acoustic its a Little Tougher on your Fingers. But once you get Used to it. Going to Electric will feel Soooo Easy! Another reason to use An Acoustic is You dont want to AMPLIFY All Those Mistakes Your Gonna make while Learning! lol.
Also By Getting a Cheaper Beginner Guitar, You can Slap Stickers All Over it to Give it some Character! I still have My first Which has been Given to My Son Lately.
We Enjoy Playing :-)

When a guitar is specifically described as a "beginner guitar," it's probably a reference to the price, since most people don't want to spend a fortune on an instrument when they're not sure they'll be committed to playing. But any guitar with a thin neck and low action (the distance between the strings and the fretboard) would be great for a beginner. The thinner the neck and the lower the action, the easier it is to move smoothly between chords and notes. I usually recommend Ibanez (acoustic or electric) or Jasmine by Takamine (acoustic) guitars for beginners, since they're very comfortable to play, sound great, and are often nicer than guitars costing twice as much. But anyone thinking about playing should visit a guitar store and test drive a bunch of different models, since each will have its own feel. One person's dream guitar is another's nightmare, so whichever guitar feels natural in your hands is the one to choose.

Well - to be honest - any guitar will work. Most people quit after beginning to play mainly do to the pain in their fingers. It takes a while to build up good calluses on your fingertips, and the small finger movements may cause some cramping. But keep at it! If you have the money to spend, and you're determined not to give it up, I would definitely buy a guitar with good "action". Action, as it pertains to guitar, refers to the height of the strings above the fretboard. The closer the strings to the fretboard, the less pressure is needed to be applied. Lesson would be a great idea also. You'll learn much faster, and you may have more motivation. Good luck to you!

up y is correct. Don't buy a really cheap guitar. I did at first and for a long time I thought I was a useless guitar player. Then I bought a reasonable guitar and it was a different world after that. Buy something acoustic to start with a good name like Fender or Ibanez- it can be second hand to save money.

Go for a wooden guitar in the $100 range. Most important is for the guitar to feel comfortable. You have to like holding it. Just go to any music shop and test each guitar by gripping it. If it feels good and comfortable that's the guitar for you. As far as learning to play, go to the library and take out a DVD about how to play chords. That's the first thing you need to learn are chords.

Ibanez makes good starter guitars, acoustic and electric. Don't get a 12-string, they're harder to play. Check out cyberfret.com (it might be .net) for some beginner lessons.

Don't buy a cheapo guitar. It will be hard to play. You don't have to spend a fortune either. Find one with a nice, low action. Use light strings.

Definition: As it pertains to guitar, action refers to the height of the strings above the fretboard.

the best guitar is hard to define because everybody likes a different style and feel to their guitar, your best and mine would be different. For lesons there are a lot of sites on the net just look around. One to try is ultimate-guitar.com, it has leesons ad tabs for all players.
