DO NOT USE VASSILINE!! It will only slow down your valves. (don't use it on your slides either, use the stuff specifically made for slides) when you really need valve oil and don't have a way to get some, you can use a little bit of water or your own spit. but I recommend you do not skip valve oil completly because eventually it can do some damage. but valve oil is very inexpensive so you should go get some. I think store brand valve oil sucks so I use blue juice.

No, it's ok, they are both the same. I've been using trumpet oil on my trombone slide for the past 4 yrs. It is less expensive, ad usually in stock. It's not bad. If i've used it for 4 yrs. I'm sure you can use it too! my BFF even used to use my trombone oil, that's how i ran out in the first place. I hope you do well with your instrument! Both are made of the same oil products. But i don't reccomend using cooking oil, or vegtable oil, it is too thick and makes the slide/valves greasy and is very hard to get off. Hope this helps.

My director has told me that if you're in a pinch and have no oil, your own spit will do the job....but let's hope you find the valve oil. (And on that note, I recommend Blue Juice valve oil; it lasts and lasts)
