You have the option of including or not including a cover letter....do you think it really makes a difference? Or do the hiring people just go straight to the resume?

They go straight for the resume... why????
Because with the cover letter you have to be VERY VERY specific and go into a lot of detail which is basically the SAME information that is on your Resume, it's just in the form of a letter.. the Resume is spaced out and it's easier to read.
Skip the cover letter because they won't read it.. plus it will save you 15 minutes!
I myself had the same question a few months ago.. so I develped a system to help me find out..
I sent out 10 with a cover letter and 10 without a cover letter. I got replies from all the ones I sent out WITOUT a cover letter.

Good Luck

I think most companies on Monster do not require or resuest a cover letter. They are going to make the hire based on YOU! All your resume will do is get your foot in the door based on your qualifications and experience. A cover letter IMO is a waste of time for online applications. However each company is different so make sure you read the entire job description and if they allow it then go for it. Put it this way it cant hurt you as long as its a well thought out and articulate cover letter, that dosnt shoot yourself in the foot. Hope this helps.

It sure as heck DOES make a difference. Your cover letter is almost as important as your resume. People who don't include cover letters are often looked upon as "too lazy" to do one, and that's a strike against you when applying for a job. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but it's another opportunity to "sell yourself" and show prospective employers that you're motivated and energetic. Do yourself a favor and take the time to do a good cover letter when you apply for jobs.

Just go straight for the resume. Cover letters need to be tailored to the job you are applying for. They shoukld be very specific.

i didnt do one when i was using them. some look for it, some dont (this fact came from a CEO of a food company in chicago). i wouldnt do one and then if a company asks for it u can give them one specifically for that job. (that happened to me once...i sent out packets w/o coverletter and a place contacted me to have a fax of my coverletter)
