"Pride and Prejudice" is the default answer to this question, but if you'd like a really intriguing love story, pick up Bram Stoker's "Dracula." It isn't the first choice for most people, but when you boil down to its essence, it's truly about a man who loved a woman so much that he was willing to live forever to find her troubled soul.
Twisted, but definitely a love story in there somewhere.

My Favorite love story that is a classic with a happy ending is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, it takes a little while for her to find her happy ending but it is so worth it. It is beautifully written, or if you are looking for a comedic classic I recommend The Taming of The Shrew by William Shakespeare it is in Elizabethan English but it is a good read and very witty. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen has a certain amount of wittiness that is great and that many really enjoy as well as a wonderful ending. There are three of my favorite books of classical romance. I hope it will help.

" Pride and Prejudice " by Jane Austen is a classic tale of love set in the early 1800's. This book is the favourite of many people and is constantly voted in the Top 10 books here in Australia.
After the usual struggles, the characters evolve and find each other in the end. Each time I read this book, I still go through the same emotions of hoping that Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy get together.

I concur with those before me - "Pride and Prejudice", or anything by Jane Asten, is the best example of what typifies a love story and does so in a wonderfully witty and grand style.
For the down side of love -
"Wuthering Heights" by Charlotte Bronte
"Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne
"Tess of D'Ubervilles" by Henry James

The Notebook... It doesn't exactly have a happy ending, but they were old and lived full lives in love with one another... That is always a happy ending, even in death!
Loved it!
