It depends on the person doing the answering. Some do it specifically for points, some to advertise their websites, some just to pass time, some because they are bored, and some because they genuinely want to help others. The motivation is as varied as the number of people who answer questions.

So people that ask the questions can receive informative suggestions and answers on how to handle issues/problems or queries. The best thing about this Yahoo site is that there are forums for serious questions and light hearted ones for people that just fancy a bit of fun!
