tj--i would love to hear more of your story. it sounds like it might be empowering and inspiring. i myself am white, but i am often so moved and deeply touched by these types of stories. for example, a local musical ensemble near me, who rose from the ghetto and have entertained local gang members and showed them a cleaner way of life, have been accused of violating city ordinances and should face stiff punishment in the criminal justice system, but i think that they made significant contributions to African-American culture, and continue to be a vibrant and integral part of the "Harlem Renaissance."

sure.

sad part most poor stay poor but some really motivated people can do it.

not sure if defeatism is a factor in more people not succeeding; racism is likely only one third of the equation.

Anyway, gr8 for you.

BTW: I did not mention afirmative action for a bit of a reason. Not sure all ppl who did what you do do so because of "token" jobs or simply persistance and hard work. I'm assuming nobody "Gave you" your success; otherwise more people would be like you of course. My suspision is the later. Companies that dont higher skilled and determined people because of prejudice have competive disadvange over those who do.

Truth be told, if I were an employer I consider very much people who pulled themselves out of their bootstraps from poor background because I'd know such people are of the best caliper.

I was raised in the ghetto and made it out without any govt aid. YTs were taught to never ask for it or expect it, since no matter how poor you were, it was reserved for minorities.

Dysfunction knows no boundaries. I am white and did the same. It is simply a matter of choice. Get out and don't look back or stay and be consumed. Misery truly loves company. Congratulations!

What do you want a medal? That's what you are supposed to do. Not like most who make it a way of life. And actually glamorize it. I guess Affirmative Action has done something besides piss most people off.
