First: eliminate the parenthesis --- distribute the outer negative sign with the term in parenthesis...

0.73 + 0.96 = - 0.23

Sec: combine the terms on the left...

1.69 = - 0.23

Is this equation true? No, its false.

The answer's false.
First of all, you have 0.73-(-0.96). In algebra, we are taught that when you put a negative sign in front of a negative number alone, it makes it the opposite sign, which is positive. So, since we have a negative sign in front of -0.96, it makes it 0.96, because the sign is switched because of the negative number.
So, now that we have that number simplified, you just go 0.73+0.96 (since -(-0.96) is the same is 0.96, you can replace 0.96 with -(-0.96) and not change the value of the original expression).
So, let's add.
0.73
+0.96
_____
1.69
Therefore, the answer is 1.69, so the answer -0.23 is false.
There you go. I'm glad I could help. :)

False. When you subtract a negative number, it's the same as adding a positive number:

0.73 - (-0.96) = 1.69
