So do i have to replace the whole rear end of the car.....or just the differential, particularly the pinion flange or ring/pinion??? (when i jacked the car up and rotated the rear tires i could clearly see how the pinion-differential connection appeared to be lose. how can i fix this problem?) o this is on a 2000 v6 mustang, my other one doesnt have this problem.

A rebuild is in order. The only thing to consider is cost of rebuilding the rear end vs. replacing it with a new one.

you will might desire to the two replace the entire differential, or replace the hoop and pinion gears. that's obtainable lots of the bearings or planetary gears (if any) are broken as nicely. whilst changing the hoop and pinion, there are tolerances that could desire to be met or the gears will visit pot quickly. those are adjusted using shims on the two area of the kit set in the housing and on the pinion shaft. What you will set is the appropriate factor at which the gears mesh. it would be examined lower back after some use to insure it remains outstanding and hasn't moved. Its no longer rocket technological information, yet its no longer straightforward the two.

Sounds like you blew the rear end. You can have the existing one rebuilt, but only if there is no damage to the housing. In which case you would need to replace the entire thing. You also mention that the "connection" is loose. You might also want to check the universal joint.

A rebuild is pretty easy for a mechanic (requires special tools), it is the cheapest solotion, and it will work just as well as getting another one

special tools and knowlege needed. save you $ and get a pro to fix it...if you put it togther with out the proper backlash or crush bearing pressure it will not last long...
