but not sure what to get, we had 2 dogs years ago an alsation and a doberman, although we don`t have children in the house ( they are all grown up ) we have 9 grand-children so we need to get a dog that is good with kids as they are around at the weekends, any ideas will be appreciated,

Great danes are perfect with kids - big and gentle and there are always some needing a good home. Try the Great Dane Adoption Society - they cover most of the country. We have now had 6 Great Danes - 4 of which were rescues and there is not a bad bone in their bodies - lets face it what do they have to prove? They need very little exercise as their hearts are only as big as a Labs but the do need lots of cuddles. Oh and they eat less than a German Shepherd. There are plenty of sites to read up on this really special breed so best of luck.

Although I would go for a rescue dog, it is not a good idea when there are children around as you don't know what problems the dog may have had in the past and you can't gauge his reaction to the unpredictable behaviour of children.

Personally I would go for a lab/retriever type dog although my favourite would be an English Springer Spaniel. My springer was brilliant with kids and was great company too.

If you can keep up with their energy, Irish and English Setters are big cream puffs and so beautiful with their golden coats. They do have an abundance of energy. Try looking on puppyfind.com or puppyfinder.com or any other websites that describe all the different breeds. There are many friendly breeds that are great with kids, it just depends on your preference. Those websites will be a big help. I recommend you take your time and learn about each breed before buying. A dog is like a baby, a lot of work, some more than others.

Hope that helps,

You could go to this web site below. There us a quiz on it which will help you out, not to mention lots of information on all kinds of breeds, including if they are good with children.
I have an Aussie (Australian Shepherd) and I love her to pieces! She's amazing with younger children, which is a must, since I do daycare. I think other than getting a breed that is good with kids, it is more important to get a puppy. Then it grows up with the kids and they are not strange to it. Rescue dogs are great, but you do not always know what you are getting. I would suggest buying from a breeder, since most reputable breeders will not sell you a puppy if your lifestyle doesn't suit the breed.
Usually, larger breeds are better with children.
Good luck!

Not a well known fact but the breed of dog that most commonly attacks people in this country is ... Golden Retriever.

Me, I've got two very young children and a Springer Spaniel. I can't recommend them enough provided you have enough time for an hours (minimum) exercise each day.

I was brought up in a family that bred spaniels so I know for a fact they are fantastic pets and great with children of all ages. They're so patient and loving, plus lots brighter than retrievers - which we also used to breed for gun-dogs.

Hi, sounds like you like big dogs, why not consider a labrador? I have had alsations in the past and have had a labrador for a year now, they are very friendly and intelligable dogs easy to train and are great around kids.

Golden retrievers all the way! I am biased because I have two goldens. But they are the kindest, most gentle breed I have ever been around and they are excellent with children. On the downside, they are large, they shed a lot and they don't realize their own strength. My 115-pound golden boy is clumsy and tends to step on me...he thinks he's a lap dog.

i would recommend a collie, they are good with kids, intelligent and respond well to training, i would advise not to go for any small dogs as they tend to feel more threatened by children and may be snappy and of course stay away from the obvious dobermans, rottys, pitbull etc. Oh of course labradors are good dogs also so either a border collie or labrador.

My brother just adopted a georgeous dog from our local rescue. She is part staffy, part pointer and looks like she's got a bit of border collie thrown in there too. I would go and explain what type of dog you want and see what they've got to suit you. I don't think the breed is really that important. Good luck

Generally you choose a dog by the actions you want the dog to do. If you are looking for a pet that would get along with your grandchildren and you are not interested in protection, racing, hunting, etc., I would say go for the mixed breeds.
