Hi,

I am moving to Vancouver and was wondering where is the best place to live. My criteria is that it's family friendly with good schools and is safe and is less than 1 hours commute of downtown. Ideally more suburban than urban but somewhere with a bit of life ie. restaurants, pubs, shops, etc.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey I was born and raised in Vancouver.. Vancouver is a really beautiful and nice place to live but for safety concerns you may have I would suggest living in north burnaby its the town just east of vancouver its still a short commute downtown and its safer than vancouver..with all of the benefits of vancouver still right there.. yes homes can be rather pricey like me I live in a 1 bedroom apartment here its only $625.00 a month.. in north burnaby it can get a little pricey depending on what your wanting if so south burnaby is just as nice and more of a view...

Any other place east of here like langley, pitt meadows etc are nice as well but if your wanting that close to vancouver commute dont go to those areas for you will be driving for at minimum an hour..

If you do move here I hope you enjoy it is a beautiful place to live...

'Vancouver West' (Not to be confused with 'West Vancouver') fittest your description the best. It has trendy stores, renowned resturants, manicured lawns, and the top highschools and university in BC. Neighbourhoods in Vancouver West include: Kitsilano, Cambie, Arbutus, and Shaugnessy

I would highly not recommed moving into the Downtown Core if you plan to raise a family.

'Vancouver East' is a bit more affordable compared to 'Vancouver West'. There are pockets of sketchy drug infested neighbourhoods, condensed in the Hastings neighbhourhood. Other then that Vancouver East is just as safe as the West. Shopping is more ethnic and cultural then the west.

Langley is great but it would be a hour commute to the airport. White Rock/South Surrey would be a much easier comute and are very desirable areas. Surrey is a huge City in size and has nice parts and a few crappy. Dont be to afraid of it. Its a lot cheaper than Vancouver or Richmond.

White rock is a great spot, you are right at the ocean and it is within 1 hour from downtown.Ladner and Tswassen are also by the water, ferry to Vancouver Island and less than 1 hour form downtown.Langley is nice,I was born and raised there but any commute over the Port Mann Bridge,Alex Fraser or Patullo are horrible!!Good luck and Welcome!

Welcome to the most beautiful place on earth.

Langley is very nice but expensive, heavy traffic all the time.
Abbotsford is quite a bit less expensive, it is growing quite quickly, lots of monster homes going up everywhere.
Chilliwack, just over an hour drive to downtown Vancouver, very affordable housing ( compared to everywhere else), bit of a drive, but well worth it, the views are incredible, lakes near by, shopping.

White Rock and South Surrey are great. The schools are good, lots of recreation close at hand (beaches, parks). Easy access to the city (choice of routes, buses are regular) White Rock is right on the US border and close to the airport and ferries. Like all of the Lower Mainland it's becoming expensive.

White Rock has great restaurants on its beachfront (also in nearby Crescent Beach and Ocean Park).

I'd take a look at Langley, or if you don't mind going a little farther down the valley there's Abbotsford -- I've lived in both, the Fraser Valley is a beautiful place to live
