Well I like both. Stratego certainly doesn't take as long to set up or as long to play either. You can play 3-4 games every night and you can't do that when playing Risk which is also a little more complicated as far as using military strategy.

Stratego is not simpler or inferior to risk..they are different games and require different strategies. Stratego has an element of surprise and discovery and more variety of pieces, ranks and movements than risk for starters...The question should be why does Risk exist with Axis and allies around

They're very different due to the element of chnace in Risk w dice & cards drawn.

And you can play a game of Stratego in under an hour easily, not even close to that w Risk!!

Stratego is a much simpler game than Risk. Stratego can be played by a much younger audience.

They're two totally different games. Dice (randomness) in Risk vs. no dice in Stratego for example.
