Join the club.

You are the best security after installing a good antivirus program. If you are careless, no program can save you.

Do not open e-mail from anyone you don't trust. Do not click on links. Instead, if you want to see if they are legitimate, carefully right-click the link, copy, and paste in the address bar. See where it takes you.

You just have to be careful and aware that every second you are online, someone who doesn't have a life or conscience is trying to get your personal information - Social Security number, birth date, credit card number, etc. Do not give it unless you are absolutely sure it it legitimate.

When shopping online, look for https instead of http. The s indicates that it is a secure site.

There is absolutely no way for your computer is virus-free.

Every time you online, you will get infected by adware (which a kind of spyware that pop-ups advertisment), or the worst, trojans, or viruses that will damage your computer.

Even though you did not use your computer to online, the possibility of your computer is infected is high too (from USB, CDs).

But if you wants for security,

For..
Anti Virus, only AVG is the free edition.
Spyware, Spybot or Lavasoft will be the choice.

If you willing to pay for it,
Use Norton for all kind of protection, as well as
Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
Add on with a registry mechanic, and a antimalware program will make your computer more secure.
And, of course, the original Windows.

Personally I use a product called Bitdefender Professional (bitdefender.com). I have used several Avti Virus programs through the years and Bitdefender is my choice (for this year anyway). Also, you should use a Firewall - Comodo is a free program and very good. Last but not least you should have a Spyware / Adware program. Try Spysweeper or Spyware Doctor. Both very good. Use common sense when opening e-mail or clicking on links - if you are not sure what it is do not open it or click on it.

It is free forever, and has higher detection rates than avast and AVG free versions. It is at 94% compared to avast at 88% and avg at 84%, also it is lower than the other two on memory usage

Have a good, paid for, Antivirus program (McAfee and Norton Antivirus are good choices for anyone). Also have good spyware protection, which also comes with Norton Antivirus. This way you know you are safe and can browse the Internet with a sound mind!
