So far nobody can find or trace a car older than 1980 using the vin numbers.

You could go to the DMV...and get a vin trace...but that route is pretty difficult because there must be valid reason for the inquiry.

However, if its a classic...then you may be able to find it on particualr car forums.

Some vehicle checks are complete on where certain inspections were performed.

So far...you may be able to narrow it down to the state.

In Indiana, if you have a legitimate reason for the trace, they will for a fee run the vin and return to you a print out showing last known info on a car.

search on the web for clubs that specialize in that specific car. Some cars have historical registrys built by induidual clubs.
