The "hobby of Kings", is numismatics or what is commonly called coin collecting. The kings of old, were the only ones that could afford to do it. Russian nobility as well as German, Italian, French and in modern times, the last King of Egypt and even Roman nobility collected coins.

I think that the so-called "Royal Hobby" could be applied to more than one hobby. It could be equestrian riding and jumping performed by "royalty". It may be bird-watching. But the term has also been used for coin or stamp collecting.
As a hobby, I have a friend in Lucca, Italy who has over 4,200 tissue pks. in his collection. At least three times per year, I put together a box of assorted travel-size tissue packs (the ones that are 10 in a package) and send them to Italy. Some are found at Hallmark gift stores, while others are found at party supply stores and even book stores. There are all sorts of brands--not just Kleenex. In fact, it never occurred to me that other countries have their own assorted brands and designs. So the ones I send from the U.S. are but a small contribution to a really big and unusual collection from all over the world.
