I'm assuming that your AOL Instant Messenger won't connect to the Internet since that's the only instant messenger you mentioned.
When connecting using AIM, or any instant messenger for that matter, you can tell it how to connect. I would highly recommend to use the default settings there and not set anything else. This 'should' allow you to connect.
However, if you're using a proxy of some sort, you'll most likely need to enter in that information. If you're unsure if you're using a proxy, you probably aren't using one.
