What I don't understand is, why would a computer that has been running fine for a couple years now all the sudden need another fan. Could the computer be locking up due to anyother reason?

It does if it's overheating.

So if it is, then it means your existing fan is not working correctly.

So just replace that fan, no need to ADD another one.

I'm not a tech but I don't understand what the fan has to do with your PC locking. It sounds more like RAM overload or that you issued commands too close together. To free up RAM:

- Many users are not aware of how much RAM is used by wallpaper and/or a screensaver full of graphics. They run in the background and consume memory. (I have only 512mb RAM, run multiple programs simultaneously, and have set my wallpaper and screensaver to blank.)

I don’t do games, but I do know they are primarily graphics which need and use a lot of memory.

- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need.
To do this: cl Start, cl Settings, cl Taskbar and Start Menu.
-cl Start Menu, cl Customize, cl Remove.
-cl the icon for the program you wish to remove
-then cl Remove.
-This will prevent the program from loading at startup, but will not remove the program from the hard disk.

-When you are working in a large file, save frequently to restore full memory access. (Your work remains in memory until you “save” it to disk.)

1.Did you run an error check? Open My Computer,
Right-cl on C:, Select Properties, Tools – Run an Error Check ( checkmark “check all and fix); then run a Defrag

2.Are you using Yahoo Toolbar? Run a full Norton Antispy.

3.From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k., and Restart

3.click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup

4.click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)

All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.
-Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. If this doesn’t help, you should consider getting more memory.

As for issuing commands too close together, as a typist of many years I am guilty of this, also. Just try to wait a second between commands.

Hello,

If the tech was referring to the CPU fan, then he could be right. At some point in time, all fans fail for some reason or another and the CPU fan is the most important because it cools down the CPU. If the CPU is not cooled, it shuts itself off instead of burning up (frying).

You can replace it for cheap ($10 - $50) and it is an easy install if you know how to use a screwdriver.

Hope this helps.

If a tech has looked at your computer and decided a fan is bad, than that is probably the problem.

A bad fan on the processor (CPU) if you have one - would go bad and then your CPU would overheat and probably be ruined.

A bad fan in your Power Supply would be the likely culprit, you run for so long, the power supply gets hot, and has problems.

And then there are case fans. These keep everything cool, if these go bad you might be able to run your computer for a good while without ever having problems, or you could have any number of symptoms.

Fans are mostly cheap. So are power supplies.

Needing another fan is completely feasible. Many people's computers do not have sufficient ventilation and therefore there is a buildup of heat which does cause the PC to hang.

Get a simple 80mm fan for aroudn $8 AUD ($3-$4 USD). It should help even if that is not the problem. Especailly if you have modified your PC with a new video card, RAM, HDD, etc.

you are the main stressful brat I even have ever heard. U deserve your punishment infact i'm hoping she cuts your internet off and locks u in there for 3 days. Skipping college, staying out overdue? If i grew to become into your mum i does no longer enable u bypass away the homestead for each week nor with the flexibility to apply any cellular instruments. in line with threat you're able to have the flexibility to sense like a sort of ravenous babies in a third international usa and experience that they do no longer even GET to bypass to college yet you p.c. to bypass college. Disrespectful little brat

Actually your question is not so clear. locking mean, your computer is hanging or what? or it is very slow while operating? So pliz when you post. Post it clearly that what really happen to your computer? So it would be easy to answer.

Yes, it could be on its way out. Overheating is just onbe cause of it breaking down.
