they're fine, not as nice as Washington DC's. Of course DC seems to have much more funding for theirs. There are two main lines. One is North-South (the Broad Street line) and the other more East-West (the Market-Frankford line). The Market-Frankford line is nicer and has newer trains vs. the Broad Street line. Neither would be deemed unsafe. The least perceived safe stretch would probably be the northern end of the Broad Street line near Temple University.
Those who have replied about murders in Philadelphia obviously don't live here or even utilize the subways. There was just one violent crime reported (where there was someone attacked) in the entire Septa subway system last year. Beyond that an overwhelming majority of the homicides in the city were not random predatory crimes. They were in areas where you wouldn't be unless you were buying drugs, etc.
Once again folks, unless you know the answer because you've experienced the subject matter for real...it's probably best to not answer and make a fool of yourself. This would be directed at the white-bread suburbanites answering questions about the city.

Philly_Roantic must go to Temple- getting off at Broad and Montgomery! Yeah!
I thought the subway sysyem is great in Philly- you can pretty much get everywhere and anywhere- I lived there without a car and it was great!
Does the subway still stop a little after midnight though? That was the only downfall when wanting to stay out late.

They are very simple Orange line goes north/south, Blue line goes east/west, Green for trolley from downtown to West Philly/Universty City area.
Cleanliness is another question. No worse than most big city subway systems though.

Probably worse now than before, but still not that bad. I take the subway with my dad a lot to Philly, Fylers, 76ers, and Eagles games.

The subway system is good, it is so simple that it is easy to learn. It is laid out so that most communities can get from one end of the city quickly without using cars. Compared to N.Y. city, it sucks. Good thing we have a strong bus, and trolley system. The regional train lines also make travel around the town very easy.

The subway system is a great way to around downtown. If you want to get to the suburbs and jersey and Delaware you want to take the regional railways. I used totake them to High School eveyday. Very reliable
