We must be listening to different stuff cos besides that bloke from Deacon Blue I'm really struggling to think of British singers that sing with US accents. It sounds like you're on about regional accents more. Try Maximo Park; the singer sings with a Geordie accent: marvelous!!

I think that if something is sung right, you shouldn't be able to discern the accent.

But sometimes, certain words give away an accent. The word "can't" for example is a big giveaway.

On the other hand, some singers sing certain words with an affected (fake/put on) accent to add inflection to their lyrics/the melody or because it suits the song.

They don't.
Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Beatles, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Pet Shop Boys, Sting, U2, Talk Talk, Human League, Franz Ferdinand, Proclaimers, Simple Minds, Will Young, Robbie Williams and so on - none of them sing in an American accent.

I don't know but there are some American singers who sing with a British accent (check out Electric Six).

And along those same lines, how can someone studder when speaking but sing without a studder? (Mel Tillis)

I think they are hoping to achieve some status in America so they just want to appeal to the Americans. Perhaps they have more chance to get into the charts there if they sound American.
