First of all, black bears are not very aggressive and don't attack people often. If you avoid getting between a mother and her cubs, you'll probably never be attacked. However, be wary around picnic grounds and dumpsters, as bears who are fed by tourists aren't afraid of people and will knock you down to steal your sandwhich.
I would carry pepper spray or something even stronger (like ammonia stored in a water pistol or spray bottle). You can't outrun a bear, but you can outclimb them. Grizzlies are very strong though, and if they can't climb up after you they will try to knock down the whole tree, so pick a big one.
Another thing you can do is carry a big knife. No animal likes to be wounded, and most will promptly give up if they are. A cigarette lighter applied to the nose would also be very effective.

Grizzly Bears- these can be aggressive if you disturb there feeding area or come in contact with there cubs. This bear you can make yourself very tall (using a backpack or equipment) and back away slowly out of the area. Sometimes they will fake charge a few times to ensure you are retreating. If you have bear bangers (flare but sound like a shot gun blast when fired don't really work on aggressive Grizzly bears.

However, if you get an aggressive grizzly bear and is ready to attack use Pepper Spray to see if this will make the bear retreat (Ensure you spray in close quarters (4 to 8 m) depending on the spray. If this fails or you don't have any pepper spray and you are getting mauled...."PLAY DEAD" as the grizzly bear once it kills an animal will drag it off and bury the animal. While you are getting mauled ensure you roll in the fetal position to protect your face as well place your hands if possible on the back of your neck.

Climbing a tree with a grizzly bear is not really that smart as they do climb trees or push down smaller trees.

Black bears - Normally they shy away from humans. However, sometimes you will get between a mom and cub(s), have a hungry bear or entered a good feeding area. They will sometimes bluff charge as well. Make yourself big and walk away slowly if you can.

If you have Bear bangers, they will usually work for these bears with the loud gun shot sound will have them high tailing it out of your area. If you don't have these then Bear spray works really well with black bears if you don't spray to far away. Make sure the wind is not going in your direction as the pepper spray can float back to you and cause irritation with your breathing & vision. If don't any deteriants then walk away slowly and find a decent tree to climb and climb up you can at least kick the bear if it does come up after you.

When a black bear actually starts to maul you....."FIGHT BACK" as black bears will actually kill and start to feed.

Another MYTH - Bears run slower downhill.....totally False they run just as fast uphill as downhill!

You can do one of two things: One is don't show fear. Many animals can sense fear in their prey and will consider you an easy target. Don't show fear by yelling, screaming, making noise and try to prove yourself as the dominant animal. Two is lay motionless on the ground. Bears have a thing about eating food that is dead. If they think you're dead, they won't bother with you. But make it convincing because if the bear sees you breathing, it's liable to pounce.

your dead.

trying to fake death doesn't work.
Run away doesn't work very well, bears can be really fast at running, but they get tired at running they are just trying to defend their nest.
Female with little bears are much more aggressive.

trying to scare it if it's not to big, if you have a coat, open it wide to make it think that you are much bigger, makes it more angry.

so best thing to do is just moving slowly backward, do not turn, and go away trying to do less trouble as possible to the bear, but if it's already roaring...well...

- never climb a tree.

- if you're wearring a backpack - KEEP IT ON - it can protect you against the bear.

- playing dead is okay only if you can't outrun the bear. run away using zig-zag movements. bears can only keep up their speed in a straight line.

- if you have to stand down... raise your arms to make yourself appear bigger.
