hhmm first you have to be very carefully in deepend water if you don't have good swimmers with you . So if not better to stay in shallow and practice. Here are some exercises i like to give to beginner swimmers :
1 ) Ball position : Hold your knees with your arms and gt them as close as you can to your stomach with your head facing down ( put your body in a ball position ) and exhale slowly in water . After repeating that , extend your legs backwards and your arms forwards and keep your self floating in that position. To go back get into ball position again and stand on your feet . You really have to do this exercise very slowly if you want it to work , and always stay relaxed exhaling slowly as you are cooling a cup of a hot tea !!!
2) float on you back relaxing all your muscles and keeping your head back and neck relaxed. Breath continuously and slowly .
3) Do the dog style swimming ( swimm like dog) relaxed and not stressed
Important tips: Always exhale while your head goes down (bubbles) and relax and don't panic , as its always better to have a partner holding your hands and support you in water !!!
Good luck and enjoy your swimming day

I don't know what the bicycle kick is, but it probably doesn't do the trick. Doggie paddle is a good start. To get a good kick, lay down on your floor and slowly kick your feet keeping them in a straight line, kicking one foot then the other.
Floating is good, but if you're going to the pool with a friend, most likely you won't be swimming and floating.

Anyway, if you're still here, keep reading. I have a vivid memory of being 4 years old, ~~~ That's all I needed to see! You have some imaginary fantasy going on, and you expect (the gullible and naive, I guess) people to accept that this actually happened? Seriously? If you're going to call me crazy, don't answer. It's my belief. ~~~ Exactly! You can 'believe' in giant flying pink pigs in wigs with tiny purple bat-wings, just don't expect anyone capable of actual thought to accept such tales 'literally'! I can surely accept that you might 'believe' that actually happened. For instance, daddy might have swooped you from the floor from behind, leaving you with the 'feeling' (which is what you 'remember') of 'flying'...

just one extra mention, some people cant just lie on their back and float because they don't have enough body fat, for this extend your legs out and put your arms above your head. Then bend your legs at the knees at about right angles, this will allow you to float easily, but try the first method first because this is hard to do first time and you'll probably get a mouth full of water

the most important thing is to relax. girls generally float better than boys. to float on your back, lie back on the water tilt your head slightly back, submerging your ears and RELAX. breathe slowly and deeply.

people will naturally float on their own, but it's air in your lungs that will make you more bouyant. also creating water disturbance with your hands and legs will also help you stay above water.
