I set my virtual memory to 2 Gigs already. I have 512 physical RAM. I only run a few apps at the same time. And yet there would be 4mb left, especially when I'm using Firefox (not just the browser though).

I agree with Chuck. You need to shut down and re-boot your computer from time to time so Windows can retrieve leaked memory. Also I would let Windows set the virtual memory. It will usually set it to optimum for your system.

A general rule of thumb is to set your virtual memory as 1 1/2 times the size of your installed memory, you are way too high. Reset that first. The next problem is what apps are you running, one of them may have a memory leak. If you are using Outlook that will take most of your resources, don't use it unless you have no choice. Scan for spyware - that will always take a lot of resources that you do not know about. Give it the old 3 finger salute (ctrl-alt-del) and see what programs are running - you may be (un)pleasantly surprised.

Virtual memory uses the hard disk as RAM, which is extremely slow. 512MB is very low today, The physical RAM will not change, you will still have only 512, so even if you set the virtual RAM to 2GIGS , it won't really change nothing, cause it's slow by nature.

Also I find windows does the best job assigning virtual memory.
A lot better than manually assigning it.
