I think it should because kids arent' getting enough sleep and they can't focus on school work. There is less car crashes when students start later because they don't fall asleep at the wheel. There are less dropouts and people absent because they don't miss the bus, and they get to sleep in!

I have the same thoughts, I think elementary K-5 should start 8-8:30am these kids are early risers because their parents give them bedtimes. The older kids 6-8th grade 9:00am they are involved in after school programs and extra sports, dance lessons etc. and need time in the evening for homework & dinner after all the activities. High school is another story these kids stay up late and really need the sleep- due to sports and homework. My son came home last night from a school sport @10:30pm still had homework til midnight and had to be back at school 6:00 am- they need to change the school starting time I agree. Last week I took him out of school early and lied he had a DDS appointment just so he could sleep! PS- he's in HS

There was a study done about 5 or more years ago but, I don't remember the name of the study. The study showed that it would be better for teenagers to start School latter in the day because, their sleep patterns are changing because of the hormonal changes that are caused by the growth of their bodies. I think it was Psychology report. I hope this helps

Studies have shown that teens and young adults fair better on later hours than adults. So yes school should start between 1 and 2 in the afternoon from about the 8th grade on. It should end between 7 and 8 pm and bedtime should actually be between midnight and 2am for optimal student function. This does not mean kids should be allowed to run the streets until 2am. This schedule would increase stay at home time and seriously decrease teen social time.

The problem with starting later in day is if they go the same amount of hours then it is going to be dark by the time some of the kids get home. Which means the busses will be having to drop kids off in dark, which could be very dangerous. And then what about the kids who walk to school? More chance of them being hit by a car.

school shouls start later for older kids/teens.
and probably start earlier for younger kids in elementary school.
it's the nature of the beast.
many school systems around the country have made this change and they have good success with older kids getting to school on time. maybe you could start thismovement in your district. The limitation is the busses. They have to stagger the starting times of schools so they don't have to buy new busses and pay more drivers. So the starting time of elementary schools gets earlier. basically they just swap the times.

Maybe kids just need to go to bed earlier. Our Elementary school starts at 8am, our Middle school starts at 8:50 and our High school starts at 8:55. Plenty of time for the kids to get up and get ready. If school started later, many parents would not be able to get their kids off to school and kids skipping school would be an even bigger problem.
