I have a Dimension E510 and my DVD/Cdrw combo drive broke. They are sending a replacement but I cant figuire out how to get the old drive out! I took teh cover off of course and unscrewed a screw that was holding the drive in but it still wont budge, it starts to come out then catches on something else holding it in there. Am I able to take it out through the front? Is there any online instructions showing me how? Thanks

It will probably come out of the front, but you may have to detach the front cover to do it.

The drive will have up to 4 screws holding it into it's cage or onto its rails... but no idea how the rails or cage are fixed into the computer.

How far out does it move if you undo 1 screw and pull it? A little bit or more than 1/4"? If it's a little bit then there are more screws somewhere. If it's more than that then either you have a screw in a slot you've missed or the cables are not unplugged and you've reached the end of the wires.

Failing that, Dell may send instructions with the new drive or you should find it in the manual (which of course is on CD... hahaha)... which you should find on Dell's website.

There are a minimum of 2 screws holding it on. The screws are located on the side of the drive. You will have to take off both sides of the box to get at them. Also remember to disconnect the 3 cables before pulling it out; the IDE (flat), power and sound. When reinstalling you will note that in most cases you cannot install the cables incorrectly but, to make sure, the red wire of the power cable and the red stripe on the IDE cable are next to each other. When you pull the old drive look at the back to see if it was set as a master or slave (samll jumper), be sure to set the jumper on the new one the same way.

Make sure you have removed all the screws. DVD drives have 4 screw holes, some or all of which may have screws. There MAY also be some sort of quick-release system in use, depends on the computer.

After removing the screws, disconnect the IDE data cable and the power cables (and an audio cable, if it's connected). These cables could be the reason it's not coming out.

If you've disconnected all of them and it's still not coming out, the drive itself may be catching on a part of the case an wiggling it slightly while attempting to pull it forward may do it.

While I don't know about the anatomy of your PC, CD drives are usually held by either 3 or 4 screws. Check if you can open the other side of the case and if there are any screws there.
