The poem 'If' is inspirational, motivational, and a set of rules for 'grown-up' living. Kipling's 'If' contains mottos and maxims for life, and the poem is also a blueprint for personal integrity, behaviour and self-development. 'If' is perhaps even more relevant today than when Kipling wrote it, as an ethos and a personal philosophy. Lines from Kipling's 'If' appear over the player's entrance to Wimbledon's Centre Court - a poignant reflection of the poem's timeless and inspiring quality.

The beauty and elegance of 'If' contrasts starkly with Rudyard Kipling's largely tragic and unhappy life. He was starved of love and attention and sent away by his parents; beaten and abused by his foster mother; and a failure at a public school which sought to develop qualities that were completely alien to Kipling. In later life the deaths of two of his children also affected Kipling deeply.

I don;t know what you mean exactly by "unusual." Other than to say that this poem reflects a mental state that most people now days do not aspire toward or instill within their children.

This is one of my favorite pieces of poetry ever... ( and I have a lot of favorites.)

It is a life axiom... It is wisdom not yet obtained for those who are on the path to trying... Every day, in every aspect of their lives to be a better person amid all of their failures and shortcomings.

I often refer back to this poem to remind me of my present state and condition, how I am no better and no worse than anyone, how I make mistakes as we all do on our journeys...

Kipling had a hard hurt filled life...and I can relate to this as a result. This takes the human and makes it divine!

It is a knowing, amid a sense of trying to know through ones errors and assumptions. It is the difference, the common ground that we all stand on which lies between universal truth and individual belief.

I love this poem!

Thanks for bringing it to mind... It is nice to get a reality check every now and then. You are a true catalyst!

I examine this two times. the form you layer longer tale-appropriate prose is admirable, and something I even have lots difficulty with. you're making it look hassle-free, organic, yet all people who write be conscious of the choice is authentic. I generally degree the effectiveness of a chew by the form of TD's........Jealousy rears it incredibly is green head. Kudos to you, Mr Carney.
