Yesterday I banged my pinky on something. It hurt, especially near the knuckle joint, but it looked fine.

A day later, it swells up and hurts a bit more. Could it just be a bruise or bump?

If I had x-ray vision (and a webcam) I could probably tell you. Since I don't, stop by your local emergency room.

One of the first things we teach to First Responders, EMT's and Paramedics in school is that they do not have x-ray vision. The only time they can call a bone a definite fracture is when it is protruding through the skin and they can see the break. So just reading what you wrote here makes it very difficult to say if it is broken or not. Stick two fingers from your non-injured hand into the palm of the hand with the hurt finger and squeeze. If it is a full break, you can not squeeze without intense pain and you will most likely see deformity when you do this. If it is just real sore and swollen, it could just be a bruise, sprain or jammed joint. None of which will require medical attention. Alternate cold and hot compresses on it and take some aspirin or Tylenol to reduce the pain if needed.

Sounds like you jammed it pretty good. It will take a couple of days or the soreness to go away. I've done this numerous times and it's take a week or so before it back to "normal".
But when in doubt have an X-ray done.

In my expert opinion, three days medical school, you need an xray.
