Why is it when you look through the answers of questions, (I do mean the serious ones where the asker is genuinly interested in a clear concise answer), there are some idiots who insist on composing their answers in a text message format that they have habitualised through using mobile phones.

Don't they know how to perform written English? Are they so poorly educated?

There is usually plenty of room to formulate an answer and most of the answers I am referring to are no where near the limit to the extent where this abbreviated form of jibberish code is necessary.

Is it because they are fundamentally illiterate, or are they trying to be clever. It certainly doesn't impress me. I think that it is very chavish and stupid.

For goodness sake I wish these morons would grow up and use the education that they have been afforded.

Does anyone agree with me or am I on my own?

Sensible, intelligable, unabreviated, full worded answers welcomed!

I totally agree with you. I couldn't have put it better myself. I too find it irritating that people can't be bothered to write or spell correctly. I think a lot of it is laziness and ineptitude on behalf of the writer. I also find it annoying listening to people who don't even pronounce their words properly.

Is using text just a way of avoiding the correct spelling anyway?
Mind you, you only have to look at general spelling by those who don't use text to know that the English language is in a bad way.
Actually, as the grades in GCSE and A levels are getting so much better, we must all be in the wrong. What say you?

I agree completely; particularly because the younger generation can usually type much faster than those of us who grew up before every home had a PC. It is complete laziness- bad spelling is one thing- if it were that, then the words would be the right length, but with mixed up vowels or what have you.

It is symptomatic of today's 'rush everything' mentality, where speed is considered the be-all-and-end-all. They splurge out their feelings quickly, and feel satisfied; even though nobody else understands what they are on about!

I find it really annoying.
I will accept the occasional typing error (I do it myself), but when I see thing such as 'hu do u fink wl win bg bruv@', my heart sinks.
I cannot understand why people are incapable of using grammar correctly.
I answered a question "when is my name is earl back on channel 4 i love that show"
I answered 'It's called My Name Is Earl', and got the reply, "thats what i put"!
I'm completely in agreement with you on this.
It's about time the illiterates learned to use capital letters and punctuation.
You can't point it out to them though, because Yahoo! will give you a Violation Notice for 'Insulting Other Participants', with little regard to the fact that illiterate questions insult me!

It is surprising that the government 'experts' are talking about raising the school leaving age to 18. I mean what is the point of that? Shouldn't they focus on making sure that 16 year-olds can actually read and write when they leave school instead? Education has been poor, I just have to look at my friends' kids' homework and see that what they are doing at school is just pure nothing. For starters, instead of putting kids in grouped desks, they should be in rows, no more than two kids per desk, all of them facing the teacher. Secondly, I would like to see more power to be given to teachers so that they can discipline the kids. I do believe in segregating kids into classes of kids doing better and kids doing less well so that the care they need can be given to them. Some stricter measures are needed with more focus on education and less on play.

Text message and slang would be fine, although it's irritating. What I find infuriating are the times when I actually squint at the screen and realize I can't understand what the poster is saying because entire verbs have been left out and words misspelled.
I picture these posters as people hunched over their keyboards, heavy-lidded eyes trying to focus, mouths hanging open, unaware of what they're even doing.
Just my opinion. PAY ATTENTION IN ENGLISH CLASS!

Of course i agree but perhaps is it because i am not English but living in England ? I must admit that the "modern" way of writing texts annoys me a lot either in English or in my mother language...I sometimes have to read it out loud to understand !!!
You ask if..."Is it because they are fundamentally illiterate...." I don't think so but I'm afraid that this way of doing will lead them to that !!
