My friend lives with this guy who drinks daily. When they first got together, their sex life was normal. They have lived together now for about 8 months. They are in their late 30's. They have been together for a year, and for the past few months, she has complained that he doesnt want to have sex but a couple or few times a month. She said that when she initiates it, he always does, but he rarely intiates it and seems somewhat uninterested lately. Their sex life was great prior to the past few months as he drinks more and more.
He is an alcoholic but works everyday. He cooks for her nightly. He tells her he loves her everyday and shows her in his own way. But what about the sex? Can alcohol have that effect on his sex drive?

Serious answers only. He doesnt have time to cheat as she is with him at work and at home.

Yes, alcohol affects sex drive and performance.

Too much alcohol can affect a man's ability to attain and maintain an erection. However, this does not seem to be the problem as they same to be able to have intercourse...its a problem of frequency.

Alcohol is a depressant. It depresses the mind and dulls the senses...it can be also addictive. The man you describe is in desperate need of help. He is drinking himself into both divorce (breakup) and grave.

Your friend need to address the drinking and not only because she isn't sexually satisfied. It will begin to drag their relationship down. The complaints will spread. I don't know or have ever known a happy alcoholic and their family. Your friend is beginning to see the first stages of this relationship destroying disease.

But their is a problem. HE has to want to quit. If he doesn't want to, then he wont.

Your friend should talk to him when he is sober. She should tell him what you have told us. She should ask, beg if need be, him to get help.

Good luck to him and your friend.

Alcohol And Sex Drive

Yes, alcohol has a profound effect of a person's sex drive. Some want it more but can't perform, some want it less. But it does not mean that he does not love her. Just the fact that he treats her well and does loving things for her shows that, but if it bothers her, she has a few options to think about.
Your friend's b/f is what is known as a "functioning alcoholic"
She can either learn to live with it, try to get him help, or leave. Alcoholics will not stop drinking on their own and will not do anything about it unless they admit they have a problem. Since it seems that he does not abuse her and she obviously loves him, maybe she could sit down WHEN HE IS SOBER and explain to him how much she loves him and that she would like to be able to "show" that more often and that she feels that the only way he could do that would be to get help with the drinking and sober up.
If he refuses, then it would be up to her to decide what she wants to do....
What you can do for her is just continue to be there for her and be a friend. As long as she is happy in the relationship otherwise, it will be up to her..

Well, being an alcoholic will screw up their marriage anyways, but if u wanna blind urself with him cooking and workin, oh well. Yes, it can mess up your sex drive, u r abusing your body with a substance and can impair many things including sex drive. YOu are tired, you dont feel the need, you are satisfying your body with something else. Help him fix his life before it starts gettin worse. Any abuse of anything is bad.

At least he does her when she comes on to him, but not for long as he keeps drinking

Yes, it affects sex. That is only one of the problems they have because him drinking is going to get worse. He might even start beating on her alcohol make people do weird things so tell her to seek help and if he don't want help then she should leave because someone will get hurt.

YES it can effect more than your sex life. Has she tried to talk to him about his drinking? Because he sounds like from what you say basically a good person and alcholism is a disease and some people don't even realize they are alcoholics until someone they truly care about bring's it to there attention. I suggest if she hasn't already she needs to try to get him help AA (and she should go with him if he want's her to).
Hope this helps!

Are *YOU* the girl you're talking about here? You just basically want to know if you're wasting your life living with an alcoholic, pickled brain guy, right? Alcohol effects everything. I can't believe a girl would live with a guy who drinks all day. She must be doing a heavy amount of drinking herself. Is a sloppy drunk guy the only man she can attract? Why are you the one here asking all the questions for her? Is the girl really you?

I think that the drinking is the problem more than the lack of sex. If he were to work on the drinking, then everything else will follow suit. Good luck
