Is it not all just a bit sad?

People need things to blame when something goes wrong. If they've failed on a superstition they can blame that.
Crashed the car - oh that'll be the mirror I broke 3 years ago
The milk's gone off - didn't salute the single magpie
Boyfriend's left me - shouldn't have walked under that ladder.

That most certainly depends on what you consider superstition to be. Is superstition anyone's belief in the unseeable and unproveable that doesn't coincide with your own? Is superstition a behavior with no obvious relation to what it's connected with?

For many, superstitions are just a way of focusing their own will. When some mothers throw salt over a shoulder, it is simply a way of focusing their will on the well-being of their loved ones, hoping for it very hard and affecting the world by an act of will. Some would call that a version of prayer, some would call it a spell, and others would call it superstition.

People usually don't live by superstitions; they live with them--as tools.

Superstitions are a lack of relationship between an action/belief and the outcome. Unfortunately, this tends to be the case with most research now being done, because researchers don't understand the scientific method nor do they understand the correct application of statistics.

It's not sad at all - not when they have chosen a superstitution that suits or benefits them personally (like the belief that they will be reunited with their loved ones after they die).

Yes. That's why people should embrace true religion, unhindered by blind dogmas or superstitions.

faith is a powerful thing, if we believe that we can do something to make our day better, we will. People believe in tons of different things that they believe will protect them.
