statutory sick pay - £70.05 a week, but nothing for the first four days. This amount is paid through your employer and they claim it back.

In the USA there is not such thing as statutory sick pay. So they aren't required to give you anything, ever, no matter how long you've been there. Every company can make up it's own rules and most will have you accrue sick pay, like a day or a half day each month. Check into your company policy, but I doubt you've got much sick time coming to you in just 4 months.

It depends on your wage and your contract. I have been paid nothing as sick pay before because enen though I worked 45 hour weeks I was on a 0 hour contract.
