Recently I have been experiencing some difficulty controlling my car. I have to overcompensate my steering to keep the car from swerving, even when going at slow speeds. The roads in Chicago can be somewhat harsh, so I'm wondering what is the problem. Do I need a wheel alignment or something else? I tried driving my car down the block at a slow speed while turning my steering wheel left and right. The car did not respond until I made sharp corrections with the steering wheel. Before I take the car to the shop, I'm hoping someone out there can advise me on what I'm looking for and what I should do. Is it an alignment problem or something else connected with the steering mechanism? The two may be the same, but I'm no mechanic.

Take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic and have it checked. There are too many things that could be wrong for someone to even take a guess here!

This sounds like a serious safety issue, so do not drive the vehicle other than to the shop!!

Good luck

Sounds like you have a lot of wheel play in the steering. The correct way to check this is with the car parked. You don't even need it to be running, just make sure the steering wheel lock is disengaged. Turn the wheel from to one side until you start to feel the pressure of the tires gripping the road. Remember that spot and turn the wheel to the other side until you get the same feel. If you turned the wheel more then just a couple of inches, you have excess play in the steering and may have worn or broken steering components.

You are risking your life and others by driving a car with defective steering system. Nothing to do with wheel alignment. Send your car to the nearest garage and get the necessary repair!

If you are not a mechanic then get your car to the shop immediately, it sounds like a loose tie rod or steering linkage, at any rate do not endanger other people just to save a few bucks!! I would just have it towed.

You definitely have a mechanical problem from what you describe. A wheel alignment will not cause the problems you indicate.

This mostly sounds like worn steering parts ie, tie rod ends, ball joints, sterring box etc. Suggest you find a good front end mechanic
