Social Security can tell you how to obtain a number if none has been issued.
Internal Revenue can tell you how to file the amended return.
Rely on official agency answers rather than heresay you might get here.

No point in filing an amended return now - the deadline for getting a refund from 2002 tax year is past. If you're talking about the 2003 tax year, the return filed in 2004, then you have another couple months to get it done. But for 2002 taxes when he was born, you can't get the money anyway, so no sense spending money for someone to prepare an amended return for that year.

You can do it yourself, by filling out a 1040X for amended. Also make sure you can still file for 2002, since its now considered closed year. You can only file for the last three years for refunds.
You will need to amend your state return as well.

Definately take your 2003 return and the birth Cert. and SSN Card, daycare recepts, etc... and ask to have a more experienced preparer do the amendment. You are in for a refund of at least techild tax credit, and possibly a portion of daycare expenses!

get a 1040x for 2002 and can file it yourself. to get old forms, might need to go onto irs.gov site, or go to your library and they might have kept their book with old 2002 forms. All you are doing is copying info straight from your old return, and then showing the 1 extra deduction. if have trouble with the form, attach a letter to it explaining the situation and give son's name and ssn. shouldn't need jackson hewitt

go to turbotax.com and buy/download the tax software for 2002. using your original 2002 tax return as a guide, youre basically just going to do the same thing, except add your son and his SS#. the software is very user-friendly and will walk you through each step. it costs about $70 however.

How could your son not have had a SSN when being born in November? Mine was born that same month in 2005, and we had a SSN for him before 2006.
