A product worthy of the halfwits who run the European Union! But No - our own home grown cretins want to turn the clock back so that wolves can control the Deer population! So will they be shot if they find other animals more tasty - and easier to catch? They certainly will if they attack sheep, "but farmers could be compensated" they claim! And what does the RSPCA have to say about all the pain and suffering caused - particularly when, like foxes, they seek easier pickings around towns and villages? Inevitably a child will be attacked/killed - so will the peabrained promoters of this daft scheme be held responsible? Or will there simply be a massive cull of these beautiful animals?

I'm glad I'm not the only person to think this way. it is totally stupid and will only one day end in tears. Wolves were exterminated for very good reasons - Those thinking up this crazy policy should be held personally responsible for all that goes wrong when it happens - if they could be sued and prosecuted then they might think again. Gosh they must be feeding them on stupid pills these days.

Thanks for your balanced and valued opinion. I'm a wildlife enthusiast, but I'm not sure about whether this is a good idea. It makes sense in ecological terms, but there are associated risks.

It has been shown that Wolves have a natural fear of people, consequently the chances of anyone being attacked are slim, especially as the animals would be released in remote areas and tracked. Cattle pose more of a risk to people.

As for cruelty to the deer. At the moment deer populations can rise out of control due to lack of predation. As there is no process other than old age, illness or a rangers gun, animals can suffer.

Deer have quite an impact on Highland habitat. Overgrazing by them can be detrimental for wildlife as a whole, as well as grazing for sheep.

I'm sure that farmers will be adequately compensated for any losses.

All of that said, I'm unsure, as I have no hands on experience of these animals. So I'd want to leave it up to those that do.

I doubt it's going to happen, they can't even get the go ahead for beaver reintroductions.

Do you know... I heard about this some time ago and am quite worried about it. The thought of walking my dogs on Skye or in the Highlands knowing there might be wolves around has put me off wanting to come to Scotland. I hope they don't do it because how I see it is - when man messes with nature they always screw things up. Was it Lundy island where they rid the island of the rabbits? or some island anyway, now they have a problem.

They've introduced wild boar into Epping Forest, Essex, that's stopped me going there. Some poor chap was chased by one and phoned the police for help from his mobile whilst up a tree.

Wolves in Scotland - how many people could out-run a wolf? Makes me shiver.

What an excellent idea... then they could reintroduce sabre-toothed tigers to keep the wolf population under control. And then they could turn the clock back even more and bring back large carnivorous dinosaurs to deal with the sabre tooths.

The mind boggles when one bunch of idiots cuts down trees in parks so conkers don't fall on peoples' heads and another bunch want to set large carnivores loose to roam around our countryside.

Whenever you get these reports of large panther-like animals being sighted in places like Bodmin Moor the place is overrun by marksmen trying to shoot it. Wouldn't it be more economical just to shoot a dozen or so wolves and scatter their corpses over the highlands, because that's what the end result will be.

What a wonderfully romantic / nostalic notion. I will, of course, give it my full support, and blessing, just as soon as Great Britain's Empire is restored, and Percy Bysshe Shelley is resurrected to give that horrible Mr Blair lessons in how to behave foppishly.
All sarcasm aside, it wont be doing the wolves any favours.

Interesting question, but please remember that wildlife is not all about cute fluffy animals. Nature has a way of policing it,s self then you get man , he comes along alters things for greed ,as usual and hey presto chaos.Having made on heck of a mess they go back to nature again to sort the problem. I do understand your concerns though and hope you are entitled to a say in the outcome.

Most sheep farms are loss making and already live off subsidies. Whether or not their sheep get killed isn't that important.
It's predicted that the wolf population will decline in tandem with the deer population.
